Title: Stimulatory Influence of select Spices on Gastric Acid Secretion in Anaesthetized Wistar Rats

Abstract

The effect of common food spices, Cumium cyminum (seeds) and Carum copticum on gastric acid secretion was studied in anesthetized adult male wistar rats.  The rats were perfused with nomal Saline (control group) and 7.5% aqueous extract of fried Carum copticum and Cuminum Cyminum seeds (experimental groups 1 and 2).  It was observed that during the period of 90 minutes perfusion with Carum copticum seed fried extract, the acid secretion ranged from 0.663 ± 0.037 to 1.605 ± 0.066 m Eq/lit and 0.662 ± 0.0241 to 1.196 ± 0.063 m Eq/lit in the case of Cuminum Cyminum (seeds).  The gastric acid production in both experimental groups was higher when compared to control group perfused with normal saline, where the range of value lies between 0.234 ± 0.0085 to 0.367 ± 0.017 mEq/lit.. The experiment was therefore suggestive that both Carum copticum and Cuminum Cyminum seeds were effective gastric acid secretogogues, the effect being higher with Carum copticum.
