Abstract

World history has demonstrated that technology always acts as the primary means through which a socioeconomic development is achieved. In the present study, a detailed analysis of progress of railway
technology, in both magnitude and quality, in the United Provinces for a century has been attempted. It
shows in detail how this segment of technological inflow has affected the general population. One of the
most significant of these effects has been found to be the breakdown of traditional mores our village
societies. Periodic famine and epidemics father added to create a greater distress on the population at
large. The total population shows dips on several occasions. Migration within and outside the country
drained able-bodied members from the workforce of agricultural activities. Consequently, rural economy
remained permanently crippled. Thus, the study can be taken to show that development of railway
technology indeed didn't usher in a healthy development in the United Provinces during 1858 to 1947.
